Females are usually easier to by for than males. There are some lovely gifts that you can't go wrong with for a 40th birthday for her. These are gifts which really are a luxury but affordable which most women would never buy for themselves. Clothes are more of a personal preference so unless you know the person really well I would advise staying clear of clothes. Your husband or father or just males in general can be really hard to buy for especially when its a special day such as their 40th birthday. If they want something they buy it themselves and when you ask them what they want they say they don't know.
A great suggestion for a present is a pair of cufflinks especially as they can be engraved/personalised or based upon things they like. For instance, if they like football the cufflinks could be in the shape of footballs or feature their favourite teams logo.
Most men also love an alcoholic beverage here or there but wouldn't spend money on expensive champagne and certainly not a luxury Jack Daniels gift box with some whiskey truffles on the side.
An alternative to alcohol and chocolates is a designer briefcase, wallet or any other similar posh accessories. Another special present could be an engraved personalised ballpoint pen.

If the 40th birthday star would prefer to treat family to a day out or experience rather than receive gifts then a family trip to Paris on the Euro star or trip to London is always a great idea.

One of our most popular gifts for him seems to in fact be an experience day.
